Podcast Episode 22: When Your Kid Inhales the Birthday Cake: Plant-Based Intuitive Eating with Dr. Yami Carzola-Lancaster
Early on in my plant-based journey I had several conversations with family and friends about other kids who were eating super healthy at home but went hog wild whenever they they were at a birthday party or other activity where they had access to processed foods they didn’t get at home. They observed that kids hadn’t learned to regulate themselves and the underlying message I felt was that it was just better to have all the candy and processed foods at home so kids could learn.
I wrestled with the right approach here for years. I knew that processed food companies had teams of very smart scientists working to find a food’s bliss point and make it hard to stop eating. But I also wanted my kids to have a healthy relationship around food and frankly didn’t want to be embarrassed by a kid going crazy when in public!
I began looking into Intuitive Eating and hoping I could find some takeaways that would help me figure it out. But it wasn’t until I found Dr. Yami Carzola-Lancaster’s book, A Parent’s Guide to Intuitive Eating: How to Raise Kids Who Love to Eat Healthy that I finally found information that helped me find the right balance in teaching my kids about the power of healthy food as well as giving them the freedom to navigate their own food choices. It is such an honor to have Dr. Yami join us today and I think you are going to learn so much from her.
