Podcast Episode 79: How We Prevent and Mitigate Cold and Flu

Our family has had our healthiest winter in a very long time during what has been a terrible flu year for many. While I wish I could deliver you a double-blind placebo controlled study on these things, I’m excited to share what we’ve tried at home that I think has helped avoid a lot of what’s going around. I hope this helps you avoid future illness too!

1. Vitamin D: Here is the supplement we use.

2. Ginger: I like a slice in our smoothies, but dry powdered ginger has also shown anti-viral effects and worked great when we were traveling away from home and our high-powered blender.

3.

  • 3 inch chunk of unpeeled ginger root sliced into big pieces

  • 2 tsp herbal tea see notes
  • 4 cups filtered water
  • 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp. honey

Directions

  1. Add cinnamon sticks, anise, ginger, lemon juice, chamomile tea bags, and 4 cups of water to a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then remove from the heat, cover, and let steep for 15 minutes. Strain into a glass container and stir in apple cider vinegar and honey. Either enjoy warm or refrigerate up to a week and reheat as needed. Notes: I enjoy this with Lomatium & Nettle Leaf blend from curateforlife.com. 2 Chamomile tea bags are another good option. Take note of your herbal tea preparation instructions as some root based teas benefit from boiling, while many leaf based teas are more delicate and recommend just steeping in water that has been boiled.
